New officers of Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island were installed at the Club’s April meeting and end of the season luncheon.
The event was held April 4 at Marco Island Yacht Club, which was festively decorated with edible centerpieces that featured bright miniature peppers, edible greens and a few flowers arranged in cantaloupes, watermelons and honeydew melons.
Each member’s place card was propped against cucumber vases that held nosegays of flowers, berries and herbs. The “food as art” theme was continued through the event with a demonstration by Chef Bob of the Marco Island Yacht Club in which he made swans, bouquets, flowers, chicks, vases and baskets from turnips, leeks, eggplants, tomatoes, carrots, apples, squashes and melons.
Officers of the Calusa Garden Cub serve two-year terms and are installed bi-annually at the April luncheon meeting. The outgoing president of the Calusa Garden Club, Linda Colombo, reflected on her term as president, and she thanked the officers and committee chairpersons who served with her by presenting each one with a gift of a potted succulent.
Incoming President Sandy Wallen thanked Colombo for her leadership and for her contributions, and presented her with a gift of a striking whitewashed lantern holding an electric candle.
The installation of new officers for 2017-2018 was creatively staged by Opi DeFalco, one of the club’s past presidents, who gave each new officer a gift of a kaleidoscope and picked a particular color to symbolize each officer’s responsibilities.
Calusa Garden Club is a member of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and membership is open to those interested in horticulture, floral design and environmental matters and who reside five months or more in Collier County.
Calusa Garden Club meets the second Monday of each month, October through March, at Wesley United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 350 S. Barfield Drive, Marco Island. The donation was personally delivered to Carl H. Way, founder and chairman of both the foundation and the sanctuary, at the Nature Preserve.
Way thanked the Calusa Garden Club members, noting that the club’s gift will be helpful in attaining the Eagle Cam goal of $45,000.
